Bones Bearings & Bones Wheels

Legendary since 1981 and trusted by skaters worldwide, Bones represents the gold standard in skateboard bearings and wheels. Founded by George Powell as part of the Powell Peralta empire, Bones emerged from a simple mission: create the fastest, most reliable skateboard components money can buy. From the iconic Bones Reds bearings that launched a thousand setups to the revolutionary STF and SPF wheel formulas that changed how we think about urethane, Bones has consistently delivered performance that actually works. Whether you're after bearings that roll forever or wheels that refuse to flatspot, Bones combines decades of innovation with proper skateboarding heritage, built by skaters who understand what it means to go fast and stay rolling.

Bones Skateboards Brand History

Back in the early 1980s, when skateboarding was struggling and quality bearings were impossible to find, George Powell went on a mission. American bearing companies had given up competing with cheaper Japanese alternatives, and skaters were left with slow, mediocre options that held them back. Powell scoured the globe looking for the fastest bearings he could find, eventually discovering a small custom manufacturer in Switzerland whose bearings outperformed everything else on the market. Working with Swiss engineers, Powell revolutionised bearing design for skateboarding. They replaced standard metal ball retainers with high-speed precision-moulded plastic ones, adjusted tolerances for skating's unique demands, and developed Bones Speed Cream lubricant. Bones Swiss bearings—still the fastest bearings you can buy for skating after all these years. Later came Bones Reds, delivering near-Swiss performance at affordable prices, and eventually the legendary wheel formulas like STF and SPF that have defined modern skateboarding. From that small workshop in Switzerland to becoming skateboarding's most trusted hardware brand, Bones has never compromised on the simple principle that started it all: making skaters go faster.

Bones Skate Team

Bones doesn't operate a traditional skate team like deck companies, their products are ridden by virtually every pro skater on the planet. From street legends to vert masters, transition rippers to technical wizards, if they're skating seriously, they've prob at least rolled at some stage used Bones. The brand's influence spans generations, with classic pros who helped develop the original Swiss bearings through to today's rising stars who depend on STF wheels. Bones' "team" is basically the entire skate world. When your products work for everyone from weekend warriors to contest heads, you don't need a traditional team roster, your reputation, history and product speaks for itself.

Bones Speed Cream & Accessories:

The legendary lubricant that makes Bones bearings roll smooth and fast, plus tools and cleaning supplies to keep your setup running perfectly. Essential maintenance gear for any serious skater.

Bones Skateboards FAQs

Why don't Bones bearings use ABEC ratings? Bones uses "Skate Rated" specifications instead of ABEC because ABEC ratings are designed for electric motors, not skateboarding. Bones' tolerances and clearances are optimised specifically for skating's unique demands—side loads, impacts, and variable speeds that ABEC doesn't account for.

What's the difference between Bones Reds and Swiss? Swiss bearings are made in Switzerland with premium materials and tighter tolerances, making them faster and longer-lasting. Reds are made in China to similar specifications but at a much lower cost, offering 90% of Swiss performance for a fraction of the price.

How long do Bones bearings last? With proper maintenance (cleaning and re-lubrication with Speed Cream), Bones bearings can last years. Swiss bearings typically outlast Reds, but both will significantly outperform cheap alternatives when properly cared for.

What's the difference between Bones STF and SPF wheels? STF (Street Tech Formula) wheels are designed for street skating with 103A/99A hardness, while SPF (Skatepark Formula) wheels are made for transition with 81B/84B durometer. Both formulas resist flatspotting but are optimised for different skating styles.

Do I need to clean Bones bearings? Yes, regular cleaning extends bearing life significantly. Remove the rubber shields, clean with bearing cleaner or degreaser, dry thoroughly, and re-lubricate with Speed Cream. Clean bearings roll faster and last longer.

Are Bones ceramic bearings worth the extra cost? Ceramic balls are lighter, harder, and more resistant to heat and corrosion than steel. They create less friction and can "self-heal" by re-polishing races smooth. Worth it for serious skaters who want maximum performance and longevity.

What size Bones wheels should I choose? Bones wheels come in various sizes and shapes (V1-V5, P1-P5). Smaller wheels (50-54mm) are better for street and technical skating, while larger wheels (55-60mm) work better for cruising, transition, and rough surfaces. Choose based on your skating style and terrain.
